An online survey of more than 3,000 people provides evidence that, among men, relatively high spending on an engagement ring is inversely associated with marriage duration: The more expensive the ring, the greater the risk of marriage dissolution, say Andrew Francis-Tan and Hugo M. Mialon of Emory University. The divorce risk for men who spent $2,000 to $4,000 on an engagement ring was 1.3 times greater than for those who spent $500 to $2,000. There were similar results for females, with relatively high spending on the wedding itself being inversely associated with marriage duration. Of the participants, who had been wed an average of about 6 years and all of whom had U.S. IP addresses, 50% reported total wedding expenses of up to $5,000, 33% were between $5,000 and $20,000, and 11% reported expenses of $20,000 or more.
