Chart of the Week: How Black Women Experience Bias in STEM Fields

Interviews with 60 female scientists and surveys with 557 others also found that while there are usually four main patterns of gender bias women face at work, women of color are also up against a fifth: isolation. Only 56% of black women say that women in their work environments support each other, and in interviews, it was mostly black women who reported that engaging socially with colleagues negatively affects whether they’re perceived as competent. “You don’t know who you can trust,” said a biologist. “This has been a very lonely life.”
