Laundry-Detergent Innovation Hurts Its Own Industry
Consumers have typically responded to the increased liquid concentration of laundry detergents by using more than the recommended amount—a windfall for consumer-products companies. So the advent of premeasured detergent pods has been bad for profits, says the Wall Street Journal. Total U.S. sales of laundry detergents fell 2.1% in the 12 months to March, and sales are down 5.1% in dollar terms from three years ago, before the pod era began, the Journal says.
