Chart of the Week: Mapping the World's Phone Calls

Fewer than 5% of telephone calls cross country borders, according to the DHL Global Connectedness Index 2014. The index, compiled by Pankaj Ghemawat and Steven Altman, and analyzed by Justin Fox on HBR.org, also shows that most phone calls that do cross international lines follow immigration routes, the most common being from the U.S. to Mexico and the U.S. to India. In total, 41% of cross-border calls are made from advanced economies to emerging ones.
