U.S. companies with a Republican culture, based on top executives’ political leanings and other factors, are 42% to 79% more likely than Democratic firms to be sued over employment-related, labor, and environmental issues. But Democratic firms are 33% more likely than Republican firms to be sued over securities violations and 15% more likely to be sued over intellectual-property issues, reports a team led by Irena Hutton of Florida State University. The findings suggest that firms are permeated by the values of their political leanings, with Republican firms emphasizing the importance of free enterprise and limited government regulation and Democratic companies emphasizing labor rights and environmental protection, the researchers say.
