More and More U.S. Women Keep Their Birth Names After Marriage

The proportion of American women keeping their surnames at marriage spiked in the 1970s, returned to prior levels in the subsequent decade, and has been rising steadily ever since, according to estimates by The New York Times. In recent years, roughly 20% of women have kept their surnames, with an additional 10% choosing options such as hyphenating their names. Some women say they retain their pre-marriage names because it would be too complicated to alter their professional or social-media identities, the Times reports.
