May 1, 2015 In Conversation, Are You an Abstractor, or Do You Stick to the Facts?When research participants were asked to describe five photographs, the higher the individuals’ extroversion score, the more they used abstract language and the more likely they were to offer interpretations of what they saw; introverts, by contrast, tended to use concrete, descriptive language and to avoid interpreting the photos, says a team led by Camiel J. Beukeboom of VU University Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Past research suggests that extroverts, as excitement seekers, may be more willing to provide subjective interpretations to encourage lively conversations, whereas introverts may stick to the facts out of fear of disagreement, the researchers say. |
