An analysis of purchase cost, battery cost, electrical efficiency, electricity prices, fuel efficiency, fuel prices, car life, maintenance, and other factors shows that an electric vehicle costs the consumer some 12,000 euros more, on average, than a gasoline car, and costs society 14,000 euros more, while the gains in carbon-dioxide emissions are very small, say Remy Prud'homme of UPEC and Martin Koning of the Centre d'Economie de la Sorbonne, both in Paris. Unless massive cost and efficiency improvements are achieved, the subsidies being provided to promote electric vehicles will be money wasted, the researchers say. |
