January 29, 2015 Blizzard Sends Workers Home and to Instant MessagingLevels of instant messaging rose this week in American cities where a blizzard prompted driving bans and forced many offices to close. The number of messages per active user on the Slack messaging platform rose 17.8%, 13.8%, and 10.7% on Tuesday, January 27, 2015, in the New York, Boston, and Philadelphia metro areas, respectively, in comparison with the Tuesday—Friday averages for the previous week. The number of active users in those areas rose too, Slack reports. According to a post on HBR.org, it appears that during and after the storm, workers continued to do at least some of their work via instant messaging or other digital collaboration tools. |
