June 04, 2013 East Coast Hybrids Help Soften U.S. Demand for FuelGasoline demand has been modest in America this spring, mainly because of East Coast drivers' purchases and habits; while demand is flat in the South and West, it has fallen 10% below its 2007 peak in the East, says the Wall Street Journal. Hybrids constituted 4.3% of new vehicle registrations in five Eastern cities in the first quarter of 2013; elsewhere, the figure was 3.8%. Meanwhile, half-ton pickups made up 9.7% of vehicle sales in the rest of the country but just 3.7% in those Eastern cities. The number of miles driven has also dropped more steeply in the East than in the nation as a whole. SOURCE: East Coasters Drive Down Gasoline Demand |
