The Management Tip of the Day

THE MANAGEMENT TIP OF THE DAY: Harvard Business Review

You Wrote a Book. Now Get People to Read It

To get your book in front of readers, you'll have to do more than hire a PR firm and cross your fingers. You need a strategy for how you will promote the book. Start here:

  • Six to 12 months before publication. Identify future readers by sharing content related to your book’s topic. This could happen through a blog, a podcast, or social media. Start building an email list that you’ll use to directly communicate with your audience.
  • As publication nears. Secure early reviews on Amazon and GoodReads by sending advance book copies to colleagues, friends, and your email list. A well-written review is typically worth more than what you’ll earn from a book sale. Aim to have 100 reviews within the book’s first month.
  • Just before and after publication. Spread the word. Post on social media, email your mailing list, get booked on relevant podcasts, and speak at conferences (especially if the organizers will pay you with a bulk order).
