March 18, 2015 Powerful People Look No Further than Themselves for InspirationWhy are some people inspired by others, while some seem to be inspired mainly by themselves? The answer has to do with personal power: The more powerful people feel, the more inspired they are by their own experiences and stories, according to a series of experiments led by Gerben A. Van Kleef of the University of Amsterdam. Merely being prompted to think about their personal power made research participants feel more inspired by their own experiences (they rated their self-inspiration as 5.01 on a 1-to-7 scale, versus 4.41 for those who had been prompted to think about being in low-power situations). The findings may help explain why high-power people often show little interest in others' perspectives, advice, and emotions, the researchers say. |
