April 28, 2015 Illicit Online Music Sharing Only Helps Rich Artists Get RicherAlthough proponents of illicit file sharing argue that it makes the internet more democratic and efficient, Robert G. Hammond of North Carolina State University finds that it has the opposite effect on pop-music artists: Pre-release file sharing benefits popular artists such as Taylor Swift at the expense of lesser-known acts. When all artists are averaged together, the effect of file sharing on individual artists’ sales is essentially zero, Hammond says. |
