October 2, 2015 Chart of the Week: Why Women and Men View an Ideal Job DifferentlyWhen researchers asked graduates of a top MBA program about the highest positions they thought they could attain on the career ladder, there were no differences between men and women. But women chose “ideal” career positions that were significantly lower than men’s. Writing on HBR.org, HBS professor Francesca Gino and assistant professor Alison Wood Brooks posit that “because women tend to believe they have less time in which to attain a greater number of goals, they are likely to experience more conflict in deciding which goals to pursue and which to sacrifice or compromise.” In other words, women are more attuned to the sacrifices or difficult trade-offs it might take to reach their career goals.
