Researchers Find a Bias Toward Women in Online Labor Markets

In online labor markets that connect freelancers with companies offering work, women have an advantage over men in being hired for gender-neutral jobs, say Jason Chan of the University of Minnesota and Jing Wang of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. This bias may be driven by perceptions of women’s greater trustworthiness, cooperativeness, and attractiveness, the researchers say. Such online markets have grown rapidly in recent years; in 2013 alone, more than 1 million workers and nearly half a million new businesses joined the labor platform Elance.
