December 18, 2017 When Asking for a New Job Title, Show How It Will Benefit the CompanyIf you’ve been in your job for a few years, you’ve probably seen your responsibilities expand. But if your job title hasn’t changed along with them, then it may be time to talk to your boss. Before you ask for a title change, ask yourself, “What would help my manager say yes?” Think carefully about why you deserve a new title — maybe you just sealed a big new deal for the company, or you executed an important project — and how it will help you be more effective in your job. Will it give you more credibility with your colleagues? Help you build rapport with clients? Grant you more authority to make decisions? Consider what your supervisor cares and worries about most, and use that to build your case. Your boss is more likely to agree when the change benefits you and the company.
